November 25th is International Day for the Eradication of Violence Against Women.
Gender-based violence (GBV) is a global health problem that disproportionately affects women and girls. According to the latest demographic health surveys in 2016-2017, approximately 26 % of women in Haiti report lifetime physical or sexual intimate partner violence and 14% of women reported an episode of sexual or intimate partner based violence within the last year.
Haitian midwives are committed and dedicated to becoming part of the solution to end GBV. Midwives are key points of access to health care for GBV survivors. They also serve as advocates for women and girls, contribute greatly to prevention efforts and are community educators. FAHM is delighted to partner with them in the fight against GBV in Haiti.
It is with great pleasure that we bring you our Lunch & Learn with FAHM series. It is a 4-part live Zoom series that discusses and highlights the issue of gender-based violence in Haiti's cultural context. We are thrilled to present a panel of Haitian experts spanning a variety of professions, from medical doctors, activists, psychologists and more. Who better to tell our narrative than Haitian women and men who have dedicated their careers to stop gender-based violence in Haiti.
With gratitude,
The FAHM Team
