2020 designated as the Year of the Nurse and the Midwife

year of the midwife-01.jpg

The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated 2020 as the Year of the Nurse and the Midwife.

Midwifery-led care has been found to be highly cost-effective. Experts estimate that proper education and continued support could help midwives avert roughly two thirds of all maternal and newborn deaths.

Haiti has a population of approximately 11 million of which a little over half are women. Currently there are just under 500 midwives in Haiti. That is not enough!

FAHM is overjoyed with WHO's designation and celebration of the "Year of the Nurse and the Midwife." Join us in celebrating, highlighting and supporting the important work that they do. Midwives make a difference!

Empowering Midwives for a stronger Haiti

The year 2020 was designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. We are in the fourth month of the year and what a doozy it is!

On March 19th, after identifying two (2) cases of COVID-19 (novel Coronavirus), Haiti declared a State of National Emergency closing its borders, airports, schools, businesses and instituting a national curfew. Haiti is now facing a public health crisis amidst an already difficult economic and political atmosphere.

FAHM has had to switch tracks when it comes to this year's programming plans and respond to the immediate crisis as well as its residual effects and plan on continuing our programs, adapting and adjusting as needed.

We ask that you help us ride these times by joining us in "FAHM's 5-5-20-20 Campaign."

FAHM is working closely with the midwifery association (AISFH) with the development and implementation of a comprehensive immediate COVID-19 Pandemic Plan & Response.

We are looking to build a strong donor base to be able to help with this unprecedented pandemic as we continue to carry out our mission and programs.

We are looking for:

5 monthly donors @ $5/month

5 monthly donors @ $5/month

20 monthly donors @ $20/month

20 monthly donors @ $20/month

DONATE

Immediate needs:

  • Providing the midwives with proper protective equipment enabling them to safely take care of women, girls and newborns (masks, face shields, gowns, gloves).

  • Providing masks to individuals within the communities the midwives serve. (AISFH has active chapters in each of Haiti's ten Departments.)

Please join us during these next three weeks leading up to the International Day of the Midwife on May 5th, 2020 which coincides with #Giving TuesdayNow.

What a marvelous way to celebrate our unsung heroes on the front lines!

A donation in any amount is always welcomed; as we say in Kreyol, "Ti pil ti pil fe chaj" (A little bit plus a little bit makes a load).

Midwives save lives.

Help save a midwife’s life and enable them to do what they do best.

A special shout out to all front line workers globally. Thank you for your service.

Together let’s stand strong and make a difference.

International Day of the Eradication of Violence Against Women: Nov 25, 2019

BIG SHOUT OUT TO HAITIAN MIDWIVES MAKING A DIFFERENCE!

The United Nations General Assembly has designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (Resolution 54/134).[1] The premise of the day is to raise awareness of the fact that women around the world are subject to rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence; furthermore, one of the aims of the day is to highlight that the scale and true nature of the issue is often hidden.

In 2018 FAHM offered its first four-day intensive training/conference to 22 Haitian Midwives living and working in Haiti. We have continued partnership/focus group follow-up sessions which will not only track impact but offer the midwives the much needed continuing support they need in implementing what they have learned.

Midwives offer education, screening, testing, reporting in a culturally sensitive manner.

Josephine Ridore (Haitian Midwife):

1 year of this, work continues because we are the branches (networks).
Thanks to you for your love to see things changed positively... (I can't stop crying by writing this because it's really sad to have the perception that things go wrong and worse view the situation of instability that knows My darling doudou country 🇭🇹🇭🇹...)
Aware of the consequences of all kinds, we will not remain speechless because we have a lot to do if truly the wish of a world without violence, a Haiti without violence must come to reality one day. 25 November, world day to fight violence against women... yes we are making effort to continue, the game is worth it. Education, information for change of behavior”.

Membre du conseil d'administration, Lodz Joseph participera à plusieurs courses locales à New York, y compris le semi-marathon, “Rock and Roll”, ainsi que le Ted Corbitt 15K. FAITES UN DON ICI

LODZ's STORY

The Foundation for Advancement of Haitian Midwives is committed to educating Haitian midwifery students and the Haitian school and associations that serve them. The 1st annual conference is in March 2016. Techniques that reduce maternal and infant death in Haiti will be passed on to Haitian women in the rural areas that desperately need maternal and child health care. As a nursing student, doula & Haitian American this is an extremely important cause to me. My family and I know the impact of losing a loved one due to lack of access to care during labor. Each race I run from October to December 2015, is in memory of my aunt. She lost her life from postpartum hemorrhage. I appreciate all your support!  Thank you.

Merci.
